Service is on point, but Denny's, Denny's, Denny's...
As most of T&T may already know Denny's, the ever popular 24hr American breakfast diner, has opened its doors on our shores. Needless to say The Bill Check had to pay them a visit. The restaurant itself is clean, spacious and easy on the eyes. On entering we were greeted by warm friendly staff. To some this may seem trivial, but the staff must be commended; service in Denny's is impeccable.
Then things take a different turn. Our food was tabled exactly 15 minutes after we ordered... cold. Yes friends, cold food. I ordered the Cali Club Sandwich, which includes seasoned fries. Taste wise, everything was fine...but cold. I can compare my meal to my three year old's left over breakfast that sits for 30 minutes before she hands it over to me and says "Daddy, I don't want anymore, can you eat it?"
The toasted 7 grain bread which housed this club sandwich had the equivalent texture of a seasoned leather wallet; fresh? I think not.
Well done Denny's, you just entered the preschool hall of fame for stale food. My colleague initially ordered a Breakfast Skillet but alas, no potatoes. Our waitress kindly offered to substitute for mash potatoes...no thank you. At this point, rather than go through the entire menu to be met with "Sorry Sir, that's not available right now." we asked the Waitress to let us know what was. Cinnamon Pancake Breakfast it is. Unfortunately hash browns were not available as advertised on the menu so they were instead replaced with breakfast sausages. The pancakes I must say looked quite appetizing. Disappointment once more. Denny's... I'm beginning to see a trend here. Trying to cut the pancakes with just a fork proved to be about as effective as keeping your feet dry in a storm wearing sandals. That is to say the pancakes seemed to have the consistency of a swimming cap. On to the toast! Wait...that's stale too. Well the fountain Coke was quite refreshing and the coffee was quite good. Did I mention their service is impeccable?
Denny's Trinidad, a word of advice from the general public of Trinidad and Tobago: Clean up your act. Please advertise products you actually HAVE available on your menu. And in closing, try not to serve pre prepared meals to patrons, my children provide me with that service for free.
Mandiero's serves up delectable dishes that locals are craving. The term Peri Peri may be new to Trinbagonians but the flavours are not. Just so you're in the know, Peri Peri sauce is used in some African regions and by the Portuguese. Recipes tend to vary and be influenced by location but it is essentially made of chili, lemon, oil and red bell peppers. It can be used either as a marinade or a condiment.
Now that we know what the chef is serving up let's get right to it. We popped in rather unexpectedly for lunch eager to try the cuisine. Double hipster points please...this unassuming restaurant is quite beautiful, with solid wood furniture and warm lighting, straight away you're pulled in, comfort is what comes to mind.
A quick look at the menu tells that the food is simple and designed to go with the many variants on peri peri sauces. We opted for the 3 Slider Burger plate and the Chicken Wrap. Oh come on people, it's a midweek lunch, don't expect us to eat a steak.
3 Slider Burger
Patty to Bun ratio was right on the money, garnished with pickle and cooked a little over what I usually order but flavourful enough to overlook. These tiny burgers were a perfect platform to try a few sauces which is exactly what I did. Garlic, lemon and sweet which all went beautifully with my 3 new friends.
9/10 for this dish, I recommend it for those who love burgers.
This wrap should be called Mr. Chicken Wrap. Bursting with ingredients and flavour it stood up to all sauces on the table without losing integrity. Grilled chicken being hugged by crunchy lettuce was as hearty as it was beautiful. Another 9/10 , I recommend this to all those chicken lovers out there
Fair prices and eye catching portions, efficient and friendly staff can only be outdone by the flavour rich food and bright inviting space. The Bill Check recommends Mandiero's Peri Peri Grill and is sure to visit again.
