Do you love Venezuelan food? Well we found the answer to your craving. Taryn's on Mucurapo Road has been serving up authentic dishes for the past 11 years and with her husband Gigio joining her a few years ago, the menu has now expanded. With attention to customer satisfaction, this husband and wife team has brought us a piece of their culture and continue to share it with love and care.
The Bill Check got invited to have a taste of some new items to hit the menu and some of their staples, it was no less than a treat. We also got the opportunity to sit with Taryn and listen to a passion filled history lesson on her cuisine.
Although Taryn is wildly enthusiastic about food and cooking, her career started in chemistry. Moving to Trinidad however, she found that dishes she loved were only available at fellow Venezuelans' homes or by preparing it herself. Thus came the birth of her charming restaurant. Taryn's Venezuelan Restaurant serves up dishes that most Trinis have come to know and love. Being able to share her food with us is a true expression of love.
This platter is a great introduction to the cuisine. They offer little bites of the more popular items all one plate.
Empanadas - A fried pie made with corn meal dough and filled with various meats, fish, veges or cheese.
Arepas - A round corneal cake often sliced open and filled with almost anything, like pulled beef for example.
Tequenos - A popular pastry with kids, white cheese wrapped in a delicate dough and deep fried.
Patacones - Twice fried plantains, these were topped with pilled beef and drizzled with condiments
Commonly eaten in Venezuela, this dish may also be prepared with other meats. White rice, black beans, fried plantains and shredded beef. Simple perfection! Home cooking without the frills, a satisfying dish that a Trini can identify with, flavourful and filling are how we like our meals and they know how to do that here.
They also serve Pabellon Margariteno ( shredded shark)
Definitely a favourite of mine. It's a pancake made with sweet corn and filled with white cheese. YUMMMMM!
Taryn does it perfectly, packed with creamy cheese and browned just enough to give you the sweet and savory taste that's euphoric.
Let me just start this segment by saying this is not and Arepa like we've been taught all these years. Empanadas are fried pies made with a cornmeal dough and filled with anything you fancy. Taryn offers many different types and all are phenomenal. Minced beef, shredded beef, shredded chicken, shredded fish, white cheese, ham & cheese.
And now i present to you the famous Arepa, a sort of bread made with cornmeal dough (white or yellow) and cooked on a griddle. These are also filled with almost anything you can imagine but certain fillings have become so popular they now have special names. This one was filled with shredded beef and cheddar cheese. Whatever they do to the beef here is just divine, succulent, tender and tasty.
We ended the meal with a sweet treat, the Churro, basically like a donut but in stick form and covered in dessert sauces or sugar. Crunchy on the outside and doughy on the inside...heaven.
