We've been to The Canvas a few times and what I love about them is the consistency, The Bill Check decided to showcase them for that reason. You want The Canvas to be a short stroll from you house, with it's clean bare design, there's a charm to the restaurant that's both comforting and casual. Located on Long Circular Road it's sure to become a favourite.
On entering you are greeted with a vibrant "Good Morning" from staff members who also donned bright smiles and a peppy attitude. Straight away you hear their selection of Motown music playing in the background adding to the ambiance and keeping their staff happy it seems. From our first visit, we could tell that this restaurant was going to be a staple of ours, breakfast is served all day everyday. For almost 2 years The Canvas has been serving up local favorites as well as international ones, catering to the diverse Trini pallette.
We got a chance to chat with owner Chrissie Amar who is as passionate about customer service as she is about the food she serves. It has always been a dream of hers to own a restaurant and although it is one of the toughest industries today, she takes it with stride. Chrissie went on to tell us that what makes her happy is feeding people good quality, tasty food, she loves seeing people enjoy a meal. The name came about with the idea that you start with a bare canvas and you the customer, can create your masterpiece. When asked what sets her restaurant apart she told us "Our service, ambience, quality and all day breakfast feature". The Bill Check will have to agree with her as not only do they serve breakfast all day, they serve the type of food that doesn't have to be attached to certain time of day.
With all these meals associated with mornings where do they find the time to serve anything else? Paninis and burgers fight for top spots as well and for the avid foodie they win. We have tried a few items on their menu all of them being good. Their soups are comforting and tasty. Oxtail Soup could very well be one of the best I've had and their Cajun Burger is both creative and flavourful. The Canvas ' breakfast is vast and well put together. Any group of taste buds will be able to find something suitable. Coffee lovers will be happy to know their drink of choice shines on the menu and if that's not your thing then have a beer.
The Canvas seems to run like a well oiled machine but there are challenges. We asked Chrissie what we're some of the main problems they faced and she went on to say " Labour issues, finding the quality you need to match the product. Thank goodness we have been tweaking our team to suit and we work together to continue making Canvas a success. It's tough to hear or read negative feedback but we turn it around. In the end we need the negatives to make positives".
The Bill Check recommends The Canvas for a casual lunch, family breakfast or just a spot to slow down. Their soups are a definite must have and it's a great restaurant to have breakfast with your family.
